She woke up like every other morning. She left the house and opened a portal into the city.
In the city she walked through many streets, every one narrower and darker than the previous, almost like a labyrinth. After a while, she stopped in front of a door, and knocked three times, and a fourth one after two seconds. She waited a bit then a female voice talked from inside.
- Who is it?
- One who walks along the path of the spirits. One who carries the will of Aleyanah.
- There shall be no doors for the ones who follow the way of the goddess.
A woman opened the door, and told her to go in.
- Welcome back, Reth... they are waiting for you.
She walked straight and left the woman behind without ever looking back at her. She walked through a few short corridors and then into a room. In the room, there were six people sitting around a round table with seven chairs. One of them was bigger and was in the opposite side as the door, it was used by a mysterious looking man That chair had two other chairs at the sides, not far from it, and then in the rest of the table, the other four chairs were evenly spaced. There was only one empty chair, waiting for her to sit on it.
- You are late, Reth - said the man on the bigger chair -.
- Sorry.
- I hope you understand we can't be waiting for you every day.
- I do, sorry.
- Then let's begin the meeting. I have been told none of the subjects has passed the tests. Meaning we still haven't found him. Reth, if I recall correctly, you said you had seen an almost perfect match, how is it he isn't here yet?-
- I'm sorry, sir, but the day I went to his house to get him, he wasn't there anymore. I spent weeks trying to find him without luck. I lost him.
- How could that be?
- I don't know.
- I don't know if you remember the time gets near. We can't afford to be playing around without completing our missions, Reth, so I hope you find him quick. Our goddess wouldn't be happy if I had to send someone else to do your work, would she?
- No, sir. I will find him in time, sir.
- I hope you do. Now go, I need more test subjects by noon, specially him.
- Yes, sir. I will bring some.
She then got up from the chair and went out of the room. After a few seconds of silence, the man talked to a man two chairs to the left from where she was sitting.
- Follow her, I want to make sure she does her job correctly.
- Okay, sir.
The man went out of the room, and left. He walked fast, almost running, because he knew she wouldn't want to be followed. He went out of the house and ran through the streets back to the main street. He looked around and saw her walking towards the meeting place. He ran until he was near her.
- Wait, Ly!
- Don't call me that name, Airen!
- Why do you do this? Why are you hiding him? You said it yourself, he could be the one.
- You should know why. You know what happens to everyone who has gone through the tests. They all die.
- But if he is the one, then he wouldn't die.
- But he could! I don't know if he truly is. And if he isn't, then I would feel like if I killed him myself. I can't do that.
- Oh... I see, you like him.
- What?
- You said it yourself, they all die, the other people you bring here. Why else would you feel different about him?
- Shut up.
She then turned around and continued walking, ignoring Airen's attempts to apologize.
